What is Rock-n-Skate? - Wednesday, August 16, 2006 at 04:26

From September through May the St. Lawrence Centre Arena dims down the lights on Friday nights and makes room for Massena's premier event; Rock-n-Skate.

From 7:00 to 9:00 pm the arena lighting is turned down and the D.J. lights flood the ice while our in-house D.J. plays requests and dedications during this public skating session.  The D.J. sets up the sound system and lights along the the side of the ice so everyone can skate up and make requests and dedications.

The fun increases through the night when the D.J. and the arena staff hold games for the skaters who compete in on-ice hoola-hoop or dance contests among other games.  Prizes are awarded ranging from free beverages to gift certificates to the St. Lawrence Centre Mall.  The most successful and popular contest was our annual "Ultimate Dance Contest On-Ice" where skaters competed in a 5-week long contest leading up to a grand championship.  We've since revamped our dance contest turning it into several mini-contests throughout the entire season.  Over $300 in prizes are given away from the mall's food court vendors and the arena!

The St. Lawrence Centre Arena began Rock-n-Skate shortly after opening in 1997 continuing year after year gaining in popularity.  What Stacey Littlejohn, General Manager, and Jim Littlejohn, Marketing Director, saw in this Friday night event was an opportunityto bring to the area a place for kids to enjoy music, entertainment and ice skating together with their friends.  Over the years the St. Lawrence Centre Arena has become the "cool" spot for kids to go on Friday nights, attracting anywhere from 100 to 275 each night.
